The first stone was laid by the French Governor of Cochinchina, Lagrandière.
In 1858, the French colonialists initiated their invasion of Vietnam by attacking Đà Nẵng. By 1867, France had successfully occupied the six southern provinces (Biên Hoà, Gia Định, Ðịnh Tường, Vĩnh Long, An Giang, and Hà Tiên) of Cochinchina.
In 1868, the French administration began designing and constructing a large residence in the center of Saigon to serve as the home for the Governor of Cochinchina. Once completed, the building was named NORODOM PALACE.
