The Exhibition House: From Norodom Palace to Independence Palace 1868 – 1966View detail

The construction began on February 23, 1868, and was completed in 1871.

The first stone was laid by Lagrandière, the French Governor of Southern Vietnam.

In 1858, the French colonialists fired upon Đà Nẵng, commencing the war of aggression against Vietnam. By 1867, France had completely occupied the six provinces of Cochinchina (Biên Hoà, Gia Định, Định Tường, Vĩnh Long, An Giang, and Hà Tiên). In 1868, the French authorities began designing and constructing a palace in the center of Sài Gòn to serve as the residence for the Governor of Cochinchina (Nam Kỳ). Upon completion, it was named Norodom Palace.
